Father Gerloff was born in Norfolk Aug. 31, 1915. He was predeceased by his loving parents, Mary Louise McCourt Gerloff and Charles W. Gerloff Jr. In addition, Father Gerloff was predeceased by his infant sister and three brothers, John B. Gerloff, Paul V. Gerloff and Frank M. Gerloff. He leaves behind many nieces, nephews, family, friends and loved ones. Father Gerloff was educated at St. Mary Elementary School and St. Mary High School of Norfolk, where he graduated in 1933. Father Gerloff entered the College Seminary of St. Charles in Catonsville, Md., in 1938. He also attended the Theological Seminary of St. Mary in Emmitsburg, Md., where he graduated in 1945. Father Gerloff was ordained as a Catholic priest March 3, 1945, by the Most Rev. Peter L. Ireton. He served as pastor in St. Vincent De Paul, in Berkley Springs, W.Va., Holy Angels, Portsmouth, Sacred Heart, Winchester, Va., Our Lady of Lourdes, Arlington, Va., and Queen of Apostles, Alexandria, Va. After serving as a Roman Catholic priest for 45 years, Father Gerloff retired Nov. 1, 1990, and moved to Marian Manor in Virginia Beach. Even in retirement, Father Gerloff continued to celebrate the Mass at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church. He loved to celebrate the Mass and had enjoyed the priesthood for more than 60 years. Of all the things that Father Gerloff loved and cherished in his life, what he loved the most was God and his faith. Father Gerloff fought retirement because he felt that he had so much more to give. He continued to be active at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church. He loved music and was very talented at playing the piano. He often delighted the residents at Marian Manor with his music. He loved to travel and he had the opportunity to visit Rome on several occasions. In his final years, a great number of people befriended Father Gerloff and visited him frequently. Many were a great help to him in his retirement. The family would like to extend their sincere thanks and appreciation to all who loved him and know that we will miss him dearly. Father Gerloff was very committed to a Catholic education, so, in lieu of flowers, please send donations to St. Gregory the Great Catholic School. Thou Art a Priest Forever. The family will receive friends from 5 to 9 p.m. Sunday in H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Road Chapel, with a rosary to be held at 7 p.m. A funeral Mass will be held Monday in St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church at 11 a.m. by Vicar General Monsignor Roy Cosby of the Arlington Diocese, and co-celebrated by Father Mario A. Fulgenzi, OSB of the Richmond Diocese. Interment will follow in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Norfolk.
