A native of Norfolk, he was a son of Loren H. German and Mrs. Opel Morrisette Rathell and the husband of Mrs. Velma Leffers German. He began his vocal career as a boy soprano at the age of 9 in the choir of Christ and St. Luke's Episcopal Church. He later was a member of the choir of Old St. Paul's Episcopal Church. He was a former baritone soloist of the choirs of Monumental United Methodist Church, Portsmouth, and Park Place United Methodist Church, Norfolk. For the last 30 years, he was the baritone soloist at First Presbyterian Church. For many years he sang the baritone lead in the annual production of Stainer's "The Crucifixion," sponsored as a civic musical event by Colonial Avenue Methodist Church. He retired in 1971 as senior sales representative with Texaco, Inc., after 44 years. Besides his wife, he is survived by his stepmother, Mrs. Loren H. German of Richmond; three daughters, Mrs. Patricia Kelly and Mrs. Linda Reid of Virginia Beach and Mrs. Jean Cather of San Diego, Calif.; a son, Robert L. German of Blacksburg; and six grandchildren. A funeral service will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. in First Presbyterian Church by Dr. Andrew R. Bird Jr. and the Rev. Frank Hughes of South Norfolk Baptist Church. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.
