Unknown Man is Identified Excessive Drinking Cause of Sad Fate of William Frederick Gersdorf, Once a Prominent Confectioner of Richmond The unknown man who died at Hospital St. Vincent de Paul yesterday afternoon has been identified by Mrs. George S. Ryno, of the City Mission, as William Frederick Gersdorf at one time well known confectioner of Richmond and later representative of the Hill Directory Company in this city. A strange coincidence of the death of Gersdorf is that yesterday, the day of his death, was the fifteenth anniversary of his marriage to a well-known Suffolk girl. According to Mrs. Ryno the deceased came to this city as the Hill Directory representative and for a time was prosperous and apparently happy. He began drinking and to such extent he finally lost his position with the Hill Company. Since that time he has been frequently an inmate of the City Mission and was last seen there Tuesday. Gersdorf was born in Richmond and his father operated a large confectionery store on Broad Street. The remains have been taken charge of by the city and will be interred today.
