Church yesterday afternoon at 4 o'clock and that sacred edifice, with the annex, was filled with relatives and admiring friends to pay the last tribute of respect. The floral wreaths were in profusion and consisted of many very beautiful designs. Rev. R.M. Chandler, presiding elder of the Portsmouth district, and four years his pastor at Chestnut street M.E. Church, officiated, and was assisted by Rev. G.W. Wray, who was also his pastor at the above church, and Rev. J.T. Boseman, of Norfolk. Revs. Mr. Chandler and Mr. Wray paid the deceased a very high tribute, both as a citizen and churchman. There was perhaps none better known or more admired than the deceased. He was a son of the late Capt. John M. Gibbs, and was born in Norfolk, July 5, 1845. In the Civil War he enlisted in what was known as the "Boys' Company," under W.A.S. Taylor, which company disbanded after the evacuation of Norfolk by the Confederates. He began his business career a few years after the war as the senior member of the dry goods firm of Gibbs, Pritchard and Company, in Main street, Norfolk. In 1873 he moved to Berkley, discontinuing the dry good business and embarked in the grocery business at the corner of Pine and Chestnut streets, Berkley, where he continued for a number of years. Later he accepted the position of storekeeper for the Norfolk and Southern Railroad Company, and afterwards received the appointment of deputy clerk in the Norfolk County Court, which position he held until the organization of the Virginia Real Estate Rental and Insurance Company, when he became vice- president and general manager of that concern about 18 months ago. He was connected with this concern at the time of his death. He identified himself early in life with the Methodist Church of Berkley and was on of it foremost members and officials. The deceased leaves a widow, three sons and one daughter, Messrs. Chas. B., John M. and W.E. Gibbs and Mrs. W.B. Dougherty; two sisters, Mrs. Robert Wyatt and Mrs. Floyd N. Nottingham, of Northumberland county, Eastern Shore, Va. and one brother, John T. Gibbs. The interment was in Magnolia Cemetery. Doric Lodge No. 44, A.F. & A.M. and Lee Lodge No. 48, K. of P. and the order of Royal Arcanum, attended the funeral in bodies and participated in the burial services at the grave.
