Born in Norfolk, she was retired as a nurse from Sentara Norfolk General Hospital after 26 years of service and as a substitute teacher for Norfolk public schools after six years of service. She was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church, Norfolk, where she was a missionary and a Sunday School teacher. She was also a past worthy matron of the United Order of the Eastern Star, Margaret Francis Chapter. She was educated in the Norfolk public schools and Norfolk State University, and was the first African American Grey Lady to wrap bandages in World War II. The widow of Theophilus Gibson Sr., she is survived by a daughter, Doris Hall of Norfolk, and a son, Theophilus Gibson Jr., both of Norfolk; a brother, Caulbert Shorts of Philadelphia; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Shiloh Baptist Church, Norfolk, by Dr. John Foster. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery , Norfolk. The family will assemble at 1 p.m. at 980 Wolcott Ave. for the procession to the church. The body will lie in repose at noon in the church.
