NORFOLK - Howard Alonzo Gilbert, 78, of 7606 Sheryl Drive, the husband of Mrs. 
Ruth Henley Gilbert and son of Alonzo Jacob and Mrs. Sarah Joyce Gilbert, died 
in a hospital Wednesday at 3:45 p.m.
A native of Hampton, he lived here 60 years.
He was a member of the Colonial Avenue United Methodist Church and the Civil 
Service Retirement Association.
He retired from Norfolk Naval Shipyard after 33 years.
Besides his widow, he is survived by a daughter, Mrs. William E. Owens, Jr., of 
Norfolk, and two grandsons, William E. Owens, III, and Gary Gilbert Owens, all 
of Norfolk; and nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be conducted in Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home Friday at 1 
p.m. by the Rev. Emmit W. S. Gowin of Colonial Avenue United Methodist Church. 
Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.
