He was born in Jersey City, N.J., Nov. 23, 1928, to the late Herbert and Cecilia Gilbert. Mr. Gilbert was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church. Herbert was a graduate of the University of Miami. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. He was an active member of The International order of Alhambra, Padul Caravan 69 and past Grand Commander. Herbert was also very active with the Special Olympics and was on the board of Area 2. Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 50 years, Ann; his son, Joseph; his daughter, Marry Ann Bechtold and her husband George; and two grandchildren, Katie and George III. A Christian wake will be held at the funeral home today at 4 p.m. by Deacon King. A funeral Mass will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, May 24, at St. Pius X Catholic Church by Father Bob Ruth. Burial will be at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Norfolk. A reception will be held at the church immediately following the burial.
