NORFOLK - James C. Gilchrist, 90, passed away June 21, 2008, in Bon Secours DePaul 
Medical Center.

A native of Pocahontas, Iowa, he was the son of the late James and Arrah Gilchrist 
and the widower of Christina E. Gilchrist. He retired from the United States Navy 
as a chief petty officer, having served during World War II. He also retired from 
Price's as a refrigeration mechanic.

Mr. Gilchrist is survived by his daughter, Sandra G. Batkin and husband, Daniel, 
of Norfolk; his son, James Michael Gilchrist and wife, Carol, of Calgary, Canada; 
and four grandchildren, Daniel Batkin and his wife, Jennifer, and Ashley Batkin, 
both of Norfolk, and Michael Gilchrist and Patrick Gilchrist both of Calgary, 
Canada.

A funeral will be conducted Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, 
Tidewater Drive Chapel. The entombment will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery in 
Norfolk. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 6 to 8 
p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer
