Mr. Giles was born in Thomasville, Ga. He had retired from the Norfolk Circuit Court. He had served in the Navy for 31 years and retired at the Atlantic Fleet Anti-submarine Warfare Tactical School in Norfolk as a chief warrant officer. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He was the widower of Helen Whillock Giles and was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. He was a former president and member of the board of directors of St. Mary's Cemetery. He had served on Bishop Sullivan's Advisory Board of the Diocese of Richmond. Mr. Giles was a member of the Virginia Court Clerks Association, past president and member of the Ryan Club, and a member of the Retired Officers Association. Survivors include two daughters, Anne H. Giles of Norfolk and Nancy G. Young of Long Island, N.Y.; three sons, Andrew C. Giles and Joseph J. Giles, both of Norfolk, and Sterling B. Giles of Altamonte Springs, Fla.; two brothers, Austin Giles Jr., St. George, Ga., and Palmer Giles of Thomasville; and seven grandchildren. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday in Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church by the Rev. Julian Goodman. Burial with military honors will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. A Christian wake service will be at 7 p.m. today in H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, Norfolk. Friends may join the family after the burial at 5324 Powhatan Ave. Memorial donations may be made to the Abran J. Ryan Endowment Fund, c/o the Ryan Club.
