Gillis, 77, City Fireman 45 years, Dies Was Retired in 1934; Never Missed a Day Because of Illness Capt. Edward Larkin Gillis, 77, retired fireman who served the city division for 45 years, died yesterday at 2:45 a.m. at the home of his stepdaughter, Mrs. G.T. Gwaltney, at 1423 West 37th Street. Born here on August 16, 1870, he was a lifelong resident of Norfolk. He joined the Fire Division as a private in 1889 and had been promoted to the rank of captain by 1913. After 45 years of service, he was retired on September 15, 1934, without having lost a day on account of illness. Captain Gillis was a member of the Zion Methodist Church and the Norfolk Aerie No. 163, Fraternal Order of Eagles. Besides his stepdaughter, he is survived by one stepson, James R. Vanderberry, of St. Petersburg, Fla., and five nieces, Mrs. W.H. Fowle, Mrs. M.H. Gilbert, Mrs. J.R. Turner, Mrs. Lydia Freeman and Mrs. R.H. Copperthite, all of Norfolk. Funeral services will be conducted today at 3:30 p.m. at the Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.
