Norfolk Virginian Pilot November 29, 1939

John T. Godfrey, aged 80, husband of Mrs. Elnora Laylor Godfrey and well known 
retired police officer, died at 2:35 o'clock yesterday morning at the residence, 
310 West Thirteenth Street, after a long illness. 
Mr. Godfrey was a native of Portland, Me. and had been a resident of Norfolk 78 
years. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Elnora Laylor Godfrey. He was a member 
of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Holy Name Society of Sacred Heart Church, 
the Knights of Columbus and the Fraternal Order of Eagles.
Funeral services will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church Thursday morning 
at 10 o'clock. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery. Rosary services will be 
held at the residence tonight at 8 o'clock.
