Born in Norfolk, he lived in this area all his life. He was a son of Thomas William and Mrs. Annette Davis Godfrey and husband of the late Mrs. Catherine Bell Godfrey. He retired in 1960 from W. T. Godfrey & Co., truck body building and paint shop. Surviving are nine daughters, Miss Lois Godfrey, Mrs. Edward A. Leigh, Mrs. Thomas C. Reese, Mrs. Linwood O. Branch and Mrs. Grayson M. Whitehurst of Virginia Beach, Mrs. Thomas Lee Brown of Richmond, and Mrs. Norman T. Cox, Mrs. George T. Drumwright and Mrs. Howard Holman of Norfolk; eight sons, Walter T. Godfrey Jr., Melvin Godfrey, Eugene Godfrey, Thomas W. Godfrey, Jack Godfrey and Daniel R. Godfrey of Virginia Beach, Marsden Godfrey and Burt K. Godfrey of Norfolk; a sister, Mrs. Ellie Land, and a half-brother, John Godfrey, both of Virginia Beach; 25 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be conducted Monday at 11 a.m. in Graham Funeral Home, Chesapeake, by the Rev. Douglas G. Ebert of Foundry Methodist Church. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery, Norfolk.
