Goldsmith We sincerely regret to announce the death of this venerable and most estimable lady, whose demise has added another to the list of old residents who have gone to their reward and destroyed another link that binds the Norfolk of the present to that of the past. The sad event occurred at her residence, No. 69 Cove Street, yesterday afternoon at 2 o’clock, in the 73rd year of her age. For several months she had been a great sufferer from dropsy and the fatal termination of the disease was expected, but notwithstanding this it proved a great shock to her family and many friends. Mrs. Goldsmith, who was a native of Hesse Darmstadt, Germany, came to this country with her husband about fifty years ago, some forty of which she had lived in this city. Her’s was among the first of the Jewish families that settled here, and it has always occupied a leading position among that people, and enjoyed their love and esteem. She possessed many estimable qualities, and as a wife, mother, and friend was everything that those sweet and tender words imply. She leaves a husband, son and daughter, with whom we condole in their sore bereavement. The funeral will take place from her late residence this afternoon at 3 o’clock and will be conducted by the Rev. Daniel Levy, of the Bethel Congregation, of which she was a zealous and consistent member. ____ Norfolk Landmark, Thurs., Jan. 30, 1879 pg. 1 Deaths-Goldsmith-January 28th, at her residence, Caroline Goldsmith, wife of A.L. Goldsmith, one of our oldest and most esteemed citizens. The funeral will take place this afternoon at 3 o’clock, from 69 Cove Street. Goldsmith- The funeral of this venerable and esteemed lady, whose death we announced in yesterday’s issue, took place from her late residence, 69 Cove Street, yesterday afternoon at 3 o’clock, and the attendance was very large, every or nearly every Jewish family in Norfolk being represented, while many came over from Portsmouth to participate in paying the last sad tribute of respect to the remains of one who, in live, was so loved and venerated by all. The solemn cortege formed and proceeded to the Jewish Cemetery, where the impressive funeral and burial service of the Orthodox congregation were conducted in Hebrew by the Rev. Daniel Levy, and at their conclusion the remains were tenderly and reverently consigned to the grave. The following gentlemen officiated as pall-bearers on this occasion: M. Umstadler, S.W. Sedner, S. Westheimer, Joel C. Metzger, Moses Frankfurt, Jacob Fisher, Joseph W. Spagat and L. Friedman.
