Norfolk Virginian April 1, 1894

Mrs. Mattie E. Gordon, wife of Mr. John C. Gordon, died yesterday at 3:15 
o'clock p.m. at the residence of Mr. W.T. Seawell, 447 Brambleton Avenue. The 
deceased was only 27 years of age and had been a great sufferer during an 
illness of several months. The funeral will take place from the residence 
tomorrow at 3:30 p.m., Rev. A.S. Lloyd, of St. Luke's, officiating. The 
interment will be in Elmwood. Beautiful potted plants, comprising fine calla 
lilies, cultivated by the deceased, were placed in the parlor where the remains 
await burial.

The funeral of Mrs. Mattie E. Gordon, wife of Mr. John C. Gordon, took place 
from the residence, Brambleton Avenue, yesterday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock, Rev. 
W.R. Smith, of St. Peter's P.E. Church, officiating, assisted by Rev. Dr. J.J. 
Hall, of Park Avenue Baptist Church. The interment was in Elmwood. The floral 
tributes were very beautiful. The following were the pallbearers: Messrs. R.H. 
Gregory, R.J. Dyke, W.R. Butcher, S.D. Rhodes, M.V. Beale, L.T. Blick, Jr., Geo. 
R. Whitehurst and E.M. Bell.
