Edward W. Gould, 93, who captained a regiment in the Spanish-American War, and veteran churchman, died Saturday, April 2, at 8:10 p.m., after approximately 10 days confinement at his home, 742 Johnson avenue. Capt. Gould, a native of Kempsville, Norfolk County, had come to Norfolk at about the age of 12. For over 25 years he worked as china packer for J. W. Martin, then on Commercial Place. From this job he retired about 25 years ago, and since devoted practically all of his interests to the church. For 60 years he was an active member of the First Baptist Church, Bute street, serving uninterruptedly since 1891 as church clerk. In 1943 his church honored him with a special service. He also served as a deacon, trustee and a member of the managers’ board. Generally he was found at both morning and evening services on Sunday. Other than the church, Capt. Gould was affiliated with the Love and Charity fraternal organization with headquarters in Richmond. His survivors include one brother, Phillip C. Gould, Chicago, IL; two daughters, Mrs. Lillian G. Gordon and Mrs. Helen Harris, Chicago; three grandchildren, Mrs. Theresa G. Richards, Mrs. Lillian P. Petties, and Mrs. Majura G. Dancey. Funeral rites will be held at the First Baptist Church Friday, April 8, at 1 p.m. with Hale Funeral Home in charge. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery.
