A. H. GRANDY DIED SUDDENLY LAST NIGHT Was Taken Seriously Ill While Sleeping--Death Occurred in the Adirondacks Where the Deceased Was Summering Telegraphic advices received by relatives in this city announced the death of Mr. Albert H. Grandy last evening at Whiteface Inn, Lake Placid, New York. No direct cause for the death is given, though one telegram states Mr. Grandy was found seriously ill shortly after he had retired and that physicians were inclined to diagnose the attack as apoplexy. A later dispatch announced Mr. Grandy's death. The deceased had been in ill health for several months, but his indisposition was not regarded as being of a serious nature. About four weeks ago he left Norfolk with his family for the Adirondacks, and it was thought the change would prove beneficial to him. Mr. Grandy's remains will reach this city from Lake Placid Friday evening. No arrangements for the funeral have been made yet. Albert H. Grandy was born in Camden County, North Carolina on March 31, 1843. He moved with his father and mother to Norfolk when he was two years of age and was a resident of this city continuously up to the time of his death. When the call was issued for volunteers in the Confederate Army, at the outbreak of the Civil War, Mr. Grandy enlisted in the Eighth North Carolina regiment. He fought throughout the entire war and at its close held the rank of first lieutenant in the regiment in which he first enlisted. Among the first business positions Mr. Grandy held was with Thomas & Core, a wholesale grocery firm which did a large business in Norfolk a number of years ago. For several years Mr. Grandy was the bookkeeper and confidential clerk of that establishment. Later he launched into business on his own account, becoming a member of the cotton firm of C.W. Grandy & Son, with which he was connected at the time of his death. In 1896 Mr. Grandy, with others, purchased The Norfolk Pilot, a newspaper that had been in existence here two years. The Pilot was conducted under the directorship of Mr. Grandy until 1898, when it was consolidated with the Norfolk Virginian, the name of the new publication being changed to the Virginian Pilot. Mr. Grandy became president and general manager of the company, owning the consolidated interests, and held that position at his death. The deceased leaves to mourn his death, Mrs. Grandy, formerly Miss Annie Reid, of this city, two daughters, Misses Bessie and Gladys Grandy and a son, Mr. George Grandy; also two sisters, Mrs. Wallace W. Hunter, of Norfolk and Mrs. W.R. Taylor, of Oxford, N.C. One brother survives him, Major C.W. Grandy, of Norfolk.
