William A Graves died at his residence on Duke Street last night at 9 o’clock, in the 74th year of his age. Capt. Graves was a lifelong resident of Norfolk and widely known in commercial maritime circles. He learned the business of shipbuilding under the lamented Wm. H. Hunter, Esq. and carried on the business with success during the greater part of his life at place known as Graves’ shipyard, amassing a considerable fortune by his industry, intelligence and integrity. During the war Capt. Graves was Chief Naval Constructor in the Confederate service, stationed at Richmond and did good work for the Southern cause in that capacity. At the close of hostilities Capt. Graves returned to Norfolk and actively engaged in ship building until 1890, when he retired. He was for many years a member of the city council, and for the last twenty years President of the Virginia Board of Pilots. He was a Mason, Odd Fellow, Pythian, a member of the Independent Order of American Mechanics, Pickett-Buchannan Camp Confederate Veterans and Virginia Club, and a director of the Bank of Commerce and Norfolk Trust Company. The deceased was twice married and leaves a widow and two children. Mr. William A Graves Jr., and Mrs. Fred Bardy of Birmingham, Ala. Capt. Graves was one of the most respected citizens, a faithful friend and kind neighbor, a genial and whole-souled companion with those who had the pleasure of his intimate acquaintance. Many of our old prominent citizens will greatly miss his kind face and greeting, and all who knew him will lament his death. The sympathies of The Virginian are extended to his mourning family. The funeral will take place tomorrow.
