Graves, one of Berkley's eldest and most outstanding citizens died Sunday night at 6 o'clock at the family residence, 213 West Berkley avenue, after a lingering illness. He was a native of Portsmouth, and had lived in Berkley practically all his life. Mr. Graves, as was his father before him, was a boat builder of wide renown. His father had a large hand in fashioning and building for the Confederate Navy in Norfolk and in Richmond. Since his retirement from the Norfolk Navy Yard 22 years ago, Mr. Graves had been engaged in building trim harbor boats for friends. He had a hobby for boatcraft that would not down. He was a stanch Democrat and took a keen interest in political affairs of his community. He was a member of Berkley Lodge 278, Elks, until that organization was disbanded several years ago. His wife, who survives, was Miss Maude Swain Graves. Other survivors include a sister, Miss Daisy Graves, and three brothers, David A., Harry L., and Edward M. Graves and several nieces and nephews, all of Berkley. Funeral services will be conducted at the J.R. Williams Funeral Home, 1027 Chesapeake avenue, South Norfolk, this afternoon at 3 o'clock. Burial will be in the family plot in Magnolia Cemetery.
