Virginian-Pilot October 30, 1941
Mrs. Mattie Cooper Gray, aged 78, widow of Josiah J. Gray and daughter of the late 
John H. and Mrs. Mary Davis Cooper, a native of Isle of Wight County and a 
lifelong resident of this section, died Wednesday morning at a local hospital. 
Mrs. Gray was a member of Christ and St. Luke's Church. She is survived by a son, 
Edgar E. Gray, of Dayton, Ohio; two daughters, Mrs. Ethel G. Stanley, of 
Birmingham, Ala., and Mrs. William L. Thomas, of Norfolk, and three grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held privately at the chapel of the H. D. Oliver Funeral 
Apartments, 1501 Colonial avenue, Friday morning. Interment will be private in 
Elmwood Cemetery.
