Virginian-Pilot, The (Norfolk, VA) - Thursday, June 27, 2002 
William ``Shorty'' Gray, of the 6900 block of Bonnot Drive, passed away June 23,
2002, at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

Born in Norfolk, he was the son of the late William and Louise Gray. Mr. Gray
was a longtime and faithful member of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception
Basilica of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Norfolk. He attended St. Joseph Catholic
School and later transferred to Booker T. Washington High School, where he
graduated in 1957. He furthered and completed his education at Maryland State
College, presently known as the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore. Upon
completion of college, he embarked upon a career in professional athletics, as
well as a career as a collegiate coach.

Mr. William Gray is survived by his wife of 38 years, Shirley Hounshell Gray;
daughters, Dr. Valerie Turner of Kettering, Md., and Eula ``Pit'' Edler of Fort
Knox, Ky., and son, William C. Gray of Baltimore, Md.; sisters, Carolyn Burden
(Russell) of Warner Robbins, Ga., and Louise ``Peaches'' Hunt (Sam) of
Chesapeake; mother-in-law, Wilhelmina Hounshell of Baltimore and brother-in-law,
Duconze Hounshell; two grandchildren, Brianna Turner and Jordan Edler; two
sons-in-law, Sgt. 1st Class Ernest Edler and Arthur A. Turner Jr.; and a host of
nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A funeral will be conducted at noon Friday in St. Mary of the Immaculate
Conception Basilica Catholic Church. Interment will be held at Calvary Cemetery
, Norfolk. There will be a wake service from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Graves Funeral
Home Chapel, Norfolk.
