GRAY FATALLY STRICKEN Funeral Services for Popular Officer Monday Morning At 10 O'Clock Sgt. Charles Griggs Gray, member of the Norfolk Police Division for more than 27 years, died suddenly of a heart attack last night about 6:30 o'clock at the family residence, 1610 Bay View Boulevard. He was 62 years old. Sergeant Gray, who had been on desk duty at police headquarters for many years, worked Thursday night, as usual. He had been in poor health for several months, but his condition was not regarded as serious. Known for unfailing courtesy and close attention to his duties, he was one of the most popular members of the force and expressions of sorrow were widespread last night as fellow officers and civilian friends learned of his death. Funeral services will be conducted Monday morning at 10 o'clock at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Ocean View, by the Rev. Martin T. Quinn, assistant pastor. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Sergeant Gray was born in Currituck County, N.C., November 29, 1872, a son of the late Spencer and Mrs. Mary Berry Gray. He was appointed patrolman on the Norfolk police force May 24, 1907 and was promoted to sergeant July 1, 1916 Surviving Sergeant Gray are his wife, Mrs. Violet Keriack Gray; a daughter, Mrs. J. O'C. Mackey of Williamsburg; a son, Joeph C. Gray, of Norfolk; two brothers, S.C. Gray, of Waterlily, N.C. and Thom Gray, of New York City; a sister, Miss Florence Gray, of Raleigh and six grandchildren. ******************************************************************************** GRAY, SERGT.
