Gregory, mother of Geo. B. Gregory and Mrs. Joseph R. Small, both of this city, died at the home of her daughter, No. 11 Grigsby Place, at 4 o'clock yesterday morning, after an illness of one week from paralysis. She was in the 75th year of her age. The deceased was a native of Southampton county, Va., and before her marriage was a Miss Phipps, a daughter of the late Joseph Phipps who captured Nat Turner, the negro insurrectionist, in 1832. After the death of her father, she made her home in Petersburg, where she resided until the close of the War between the States when she came to Norfolk and made her home with her son-in-law, with whom she resided until her death. She was a woman of lovely traits of character, of gentle and amiable disposition and a consistent Christian, having been a member of the Methodist church from early womanhood and was admired and esteemed by a large circle of friends. Besides her son, Geo. B. Gregory, and her daughter, Mrs. Joseph R. Small, she is survived by several grandchildren and other relatives, all of Norfolk. The funeral will be held from the residence of her son-in-law, Joseph R. Small, 11 Grigsby Place, at 3 o'clock this afternoon and will be conducted by her pastor, Rev. R. Finley Gayle, of the Cumberland street Methodist church; Rev. J. J. Bradford, of the Queen street Methodist church, and Rev. G. W. Perryman, D.D., of the First Baptist church. The interment will be made in Elmwood cemetery. Following will be the pallbearers: Len. Simmons, Jas. H. Kegebein, John E. Burke, Walter Williamson, Robert Stephen, John Barns.
