C. H. D. Griffin, who died in a Farmville Hospital Saturday afternoon, Oct. 8, were scheduled to be held here at First Baptist Church on Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 12. Funeral services will be continued on Thursday, Oct. 13 at 1 p.m. at First Calvary Baptist Church in Norfolk where Dr. C. E. Griffin, son of the deceased minister, is pastor. The body will lie in state at the church from 10 a.m. until time for the funeral. Interment will be made in Calvary Cemetery. Dr. Griffin, who was pastor of First Baptist Church, Farmville, and a pioneer in the Baptist denomination, occupied his pulpit on Sunday, Oct. 2, and preached and conducted baptismal services. Rev. Mr. Griffin was the son of the late Rev. E. H. Griffin, who at his death was one of the oldest ministers of Eastern North Carolina, and brother of the late Dr. G. D. Griffin, who held pastorates in Hertford, NC, Florida, and Camden, NJ. Having been pastor of New Central Baptist Church, Norfolk, Berkley community, for over ten years, Rev. Mr. Griffin was well known in that city. He rebuilt the church after it was destroyed in the Berkley fire several years before he left that city. Dr. Griffin had been pastor in Farmville for 23 years during which time he was regarded as one of the most influential leaders in this part of the state. He was affiliated with the Baptist General Association of Virginia and served for some time as its auditor. He was also a member of the Lott Carey Baptist Foreign Mission Convention. The deceased minister was a graduate of Roanoke Collegiate Institute now a division of Shaw University. After his work at that school and other institutions of learning, he pastored at Cornerstone Baptist Church, Elizabeth City, NC, and at other churches in Eastern North Carolina. It was later that he came to Norfolk. Funeral arrangements had not been made by the family on Monday. Survivors are Dr. Griffin’s widow, Mrs. Drusilla F. Griffin; six children, Dr. C. E. Griffin, pastor of First Calvary Baptist Church, Norfolk; Mrs. Roxie Ezelle of Charlotte, NC, former teacher at Charlotte and now a student at Johnson C. Smith University; Mrs. Marion Anderson, Martinsville, VA, wife of the Rev. R. T. Anderson, Martinsville AME pastor and principal of the East Martinsville School. Mrs. Susie Bandy, Bluefield WV; Charles A. Griffin, New York City interior decorator and music student, and the Rev. Leslie E. Griffin, student in Shaw University school of religion at Raleigh, NC. Five brothers, the Rev. E. H. Griffin, pastor at Corapeake, NC; Milton E. Griffin, and Walter Griffin, Norfolk; Malvin Griffin, Elizabeth City, NC; and Alexander Griffin, Pittsburgh PA, and two sisters, Mrs. Susie M. Creecy, Rich Square, NC, and Mrs. Ella Moore, Elizabeth City, NC. Note: Re-interment in Calvary Cemetery 13 October 1975.
