Hall and Nixon were arrested the same day by County Officer J. M. Brickhouse and former County Officer Routten. The pair were at first being held on suspicion only and police were reluctant to reveal their names until Tuesday when their investigations resulted in sufficient evidence to file formal charges. It was the opinion of Officer Brickhouse that Griffin, who was an employee of the Richmond Cedar Works, was waylaid on his way home early Sunday morning. He expressed the opinion that the death was a plain case of murder inasmuch as one of the shotgun discharges took effect over the heart and the other on one side of the body. Death was said to have been instantaneous. The officers’ investigation revealed that Griffin had been in an argument with a group of men late Saturday night, and they believed that his death was the climax to that argument. It is expected that the case will be presented to the Norfolk Count grand jury at the next criminal term of the Norfolk County Circuit Court. This latest Northwest slaying recalls that of Cleveland Smith last October 23. Smith was shot and fatally wounded by Bernard Sawyer, white, who was subsequently found guilty of voluntary manslaughter and sentenced to one year in State’s Prison. The shooting of Smith was alleged to have culminated an argument over whiskey but this was not proved at the trial. Sawyer claimed self defense.
