Mr. Griffin, who lived at 747 Fremont street, died in a Norfolk hospital on Monday. The Rev. Richard A. Councill of Metropolitan AME Zion church will officiate at the service. The deceased was a Norfolk native. He put in more than 50 years in the postal service. He founded the Norfolk Umpires Association and served as its chief umpire until 1955. He was rated among the city's top umpires in baseball and softball for more than 25 years. Mr. Griffin served in the Norfolk Recreation Bureau as an umpire for more than 10 years, and in 1955 was awarded a plaque from the bureau for meritorious service and unselfish devotion. A member of First Baptist Church, Mr. Griffin was the son of the Julius Griffin and Mrs. Clara Griffin. He is survived by an aunt, Mrs. Bezella Williams of Norfolk and five cousins.
