Harry J. Griffith, 74, Baptist lay minister and former director of the Industrial Schools for Girls, at Peaks, died yesterday at 9:45 a.m. at his home, 2452 Middle Ave. A native of Churchland, Norfolk County, he had resided in Norfolk the last 47 years. He was a member of Jerusalem Baptist Church here for 45 years. He was in the contracting and painting business. He was a son of Harry and Mrs. Louise Ford Griffith, and husband of Mrs. Ethel Griffith of Norfolk, his sole survivor. He was graduated from Hampton Institute in 1906, and was assisting minister of Jerusalem Baptist Church for many years. He and his wife were pioneer workers at the Peaks School for Girls. He subsequently taught blacksmithing at Maysville, SC. The body was taken to the Hale Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday at 1:15 p.m. at Jerusalem Baptist Church by the Rev. T. M. Venable, pastor. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
