Esther Barnes Grillo, 93, of the 3300 block of Creekwood Road, died Dec. 8, 2002.
A native of Princess Anne County, she was the widow of Antonio “Tony” Grillo and 
was predeceased by three brothers and a sister.
Mrs. Grillo had been a longtime member of St. Pius X Catholic Church in Norfolk, 
until she was no longer able to attend. She was a loving homemaker who loved 
flowers and cherished time with family and friends.
Survivors include her two daughters, Joan Hodges of Norfolk and Diana Gilbert and 
her husband, Charles, of Chesapeake; her son, John Newnam of Garden Grove, Calif.; 
seven grandchildren, Stephanie Deprima, Diana Schemaelink, Susan Teepe and her 
husband William, John Newnam, Mark Hodges, Toni Haddix and her husband Chase and 
Shelly Newnam; and four great-grandchildren, John, Micah, Rachael and Alex.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., 
Norfolk Chapel, by Father John Dorgan. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Catholic 
Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7 to 8:30 
p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Heart 
Association or to the American Cancer Society.
