Grimes, 88, of 1400 Chesapeake Avenue, South Norfolk, retired building contractor, died yesterday at 3 p.m. after 18 months of failing health. The son of Erby and Kitty McPherson Grimes, he was a native of Gates County, N.C., and came to Wallaceton, Norfolk County, at the age of 4. He later moved to Berkley, then to South Norfolk, where he lived 58 years and was a member of the Chesapeake Avenue Methodist Church. His wife was the late Anna Hockaday Grimes. He is survived by four daughters, Mrs. David Starboard, Mrs. B.W. Lockhart, Miss Effie Grimes and Miss Pearl Grimes; a son, G. Leonard Grimes; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, all of South Norfolk. The body was taken to the Francis A. Gay Funeral Home, South Norfolk, where services will be held tomorrow at 3 p.m. Burial will be in Magnolia Cemetery.
