GRISWOLD VETERAN, DEAD One Of Few Survivors Of the Merrimac Answered Roll Call Yesterday A.C. Griswold, who suffered a stroke of paralysis in his right side after returning home from attending service at St. Peters Episcopal Church Sunday night, died from the effects of the stroke at his residence, 200 Willoughby Avenue, Brambleton, at 10:15 o'clock a.m. yesterday in the 74th year of his age. The deceased was a Confederate Veteran and was one of the few surviving heroes of the memorable engagement in Hampton Roads between the Confederate iron-clad war vessel Merrimac and the United States Monitor during 1862. He was a native of Cardiff, South Wales, but had been a resident of Norfolk for half a century where he was widely known and universally esteemed as a man of genial and generous disposition making friends with all with whom he was thrown in contact whether in business or social circles. Mr. Griswold was a member of Pickett-Buchanan Camp Confederate Veterans, Harmony Lodge of Odd fellows, Charity Lodge Knights of Pythias and Pocahontas Council Royal Arcanum. He is survived by three children, Mrs. Mamie Watson, Miss Blanche Griswold and Walter Griswold. The funeral will be held from his late residence at noon Thursday and will be conducted by Rev. Reuben Meredith, of St. Peters Episcopal Church. Interment in Elmwood.
