Norfolk Journal of Commerce Saturday December 22, 1888

Dr. John W. Gurley, a well-known physician of this city, died at his residence 
on Church Street on Wednesday.

The funeral of the late Dr. John W. Gurley took place from the Cumberland Street 
M.E. Church yesterday afternoon at 3 o'clock and was largely attended.  Rev. 
A.G. Brown, pastor of the church, conducted the funeral services, after which 
the remains were conveyed to Elmwood Cemetery and interred. The following 
gentlemen acted as pallbearers:
Friendship Conclave No. 2, S.W.M.--Messrs. Fulton Capps and William H. Fletcher
Friendship Conclave No. 4, C.F.--Messrs. J.W. Beasley and P.K. Kurdts
Castle Virginia No. 59, K.G.R.--Messrs. Geo. W. Camp and W.J. Land
Medical Society --Drs. L. Lankford and R.H. Baylor.
