Guy, Jr, 76, died peacefully May 8 at his Norfolk home after a brief illness. He leaves behind a saddened community of family members and friends, but enriched to have known him. Guy, a licensed professional engineer in Virginia holds specialty certification as an environmental engineer from the American Academy of Environmental Engineers (AAEE). Following graduation from Virginia Tech in Civil Engineering, he did graduate work in engineering administration at George Washington University. Guy's engineering career began with Norfolk Dredging Co. and continued on active duty as an Army officer at Fort Eustis. In 1962 he began a 31-year career in consulting engineering, serving municipal clients with water and wastewater problems throughout Virginia. In 1993 he returned to his hometown of Norfolk as the City's director of utilities, serving until his retirement in 1999. In this position he was responsible for 400 employees with an annual budget of $90 million and a capital improvement program of $300 million, providing water for 700,000 Virginians. He was appointed by Professor Wayne Clough to Virginia Tech's first Civil Engineering Alumni Advisory Board, which elected him its chair. Remembering sermons by Professor Dan Pletta about the importance of engineering education, he tried to represent practicing engineers on the board of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), on engineering education committees for five national engineering societies and on engineering advisory committees at four other universities. At the national level, Guy is a fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and has chaired its Committee on Curricula and Accreditation. He has also held office as treasurer of the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE), as president of the American Academy of Environmental Engineers, and as board chairman for the Order of the Engineer and recently concluded chairing NSPE's Board of Ethical Review. National honors include the NSPE Young Engineer-of-the-Year Award, AAEE's Kappe Award, and ASCE's Edmund Friedman Award for Professional Achievement. Guy was also a past recipient of the VSPE Engineer-of-the-Year Award and the Virginia Association of Professions' Professional-of-the-Year Award. He was appointed to the Board of the National Institute of Building Sciences by President Reagan, and to the State Water Study Commission by Virginia Governors Mills Godwin, John Dalton and Jim Gilmore. He is survived by his wife, Suzanne of 48 years, three grown sons, James Thornton Guy, Louis Lee Guy, III, Francis West Guy, two adorable grandchildren, Alexa Suzanne Guy and James Schambeau Guy, daughters in law, Lynne Guy, Nicole Guy and a brother James Mayo Guy. Within the community, Mr. Guy has held leadership positions in both church and civic organizations. He was president of the Norfolk Historical Society and treasurer of Citizens for a Fort Monroe National Park. He served on the Heritage Committee of St. Paul's and he gave history tours of Ft. Monroe, Ft. Norfolk and St. Paul's. The family thanks the attentive care of Dr. Ian Chen, Scott Hennessey and Jewish Family Service's connection with Hospice care.
