James Lancaster Gwaltney was pastor from 1856 to 1857. Born in Isle of Wight County near Mill Swamp on November 28, 1799, he entered the ministry from Black Creek Church, Southampton County. He came to the Cumberland Street Church from the Suffolk Baptist Church. He preached the funerals for the victims in the church of yellow fever. He died May 23, 1864. He was buried first at Spring Hill, Sussex County, but was later moved to Elmwood Cemetery in Norfolk. He was married twice. His first wife was a Miss Holleman, of Isle of Wight County. Their children were: John Ryland, Almarine, and William H. Gwaltney, Mrs. Almeda Wyatt and Mrs. Ann Elizabeth Mildred Marable. His second wife was Martha Brundell. Their children were: Mary, Mattie, and Junius Kincaid.
