W. Gwathmey, 2d, This Afternoon at 4 o'Clock William Watts Gwathmey, 2d, aged 78, prominent retired civil engineer and contractor, died yesterday morning shortly after 2 o'clock at his home, 1531 Blandford Circle, Lochaven. Funeral services will be conducted this afternoon at 4 o'clock at the Church of the Good Shepherd, Meadowbrook, of which Mr. Gwathmey was a member and former vestryman. The Rev. George P. Gunn, rector, and the Rev. W. Taylor Willis, rector of Christ and St. Luke's Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery. Mr. Gwathmey was born in Richmond, the son of the late William Watts and Mrs. Mary Tayloe Gwathmey. Soon after the War Between the States, the family moved to Norfolk and Mr. Gwathmey had remained a resident of the city for 73 years. He was a graduate of V.M.I. and co-designer of a map of Norfolk County which is still largely used. He also drew one of the earlier maps of the Dismal Swamp. Bridge and Railway Engineer Mr. Gwathmey was chief engineer for the construction of the Norfolk-Berkley Bridge and former chief of engineers for the Seaboard Air Line Railway. In the latter connection, he had charge of the construction of many of the railway's tracks in Florida. Previous to this he had been engineer for the construction of the old Norfolk-Carolina Railroad, which became part of the Atlantic Coast Line. Mr. Gwathmey was a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and a member of the city planning commission, from which he resigned a year ago. When he had ceased being active as an engineer, he founded a successful contracting business. from which he retired several years ago. He is survived by three daughters, Mrs. L.A. Davidson, wife of Captain Davidson, U.S.N., Miss Mary P.L. Gwathmey, of Richmond and Mrs. J.H.F. Mayo, of West River, Md.; two sons, W.W. Gwathmey, 3d, of Clarksburg, W. Va. and the Rev. D.L. Gwathmey, of Wytheville; eight grandchildren and three brothers, Dr. James T. Gwathmey, of New York, Dr. Lomax Gwathmey of Norfolk and E. Thornton Gwathmey of Norfolk.
