(Special) - Funeral services for William Watts Gwathmey, Jr. (sic), 87, a retired construction engineer for the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad and long-time resident of Baltimore, were being held today at Christ and St. Luke's Church in Norfolk. Mr. Gwathmey died Tuesday at his home in Virginia Beach, where he moved several years ago from his Baltimore home at 609 Somerset road. Born in Baltimore, Mr. Gwathmey attended Washington & Lee University and went to work for the B.&O. Railroad in 1911 as an axe man in the construction field. In 1916, he became assistant resident engineer in the construction department. After serving in the Army from 1917 to 1919 with the 309th Engineers Battalion, he returned to the railroad, becoming field engineer in 1923 and a year later as assistant engineer. In 1946, he became engineer of construction, a position he held until his retirement in 1957. Survivors include a son, William Watts Gwathmey 4th, of Virginia Beach; and two sisters, Mrs. L. A. Davidson, of McLean, Va., and Mrs. Elizabeth Mayo, of Virginia Beach.
