The Roanoke Daily Times, October 10, 1895

Norfolk Va., Oct. 9-A fire broke out in warehouse D of the Seaboard Air Lines 
in Portsmouth at 7:20 o’clock tonight, which, besides destroying that 
structure, together with thousands of dollars’ worth of freight stored 
therein, including bales of cotton and nine loaded freight cars, the warehouse 
and yard of Reed Bros. & Co. adjoining were consumed, and two men who were cut 
off from escaped jumped overboard, one of them, W. W. Hall, white, being 
drowned.
