                       REV S. J. HALSTEAD PASSES AWAY

     Pastor of Freewill Baptist Churches in North Carolina Dies in Brambleton

The Rev. S.J. Halstead passed away suddenly at his home, No. 506 West Brambleton 
Avenue, at 7:30 o'clock last night, after an illness of two days, in the 76th 
year of his age. Mr. Halstead was a native of Elizabeth City, N.C., but had been 
a resident of Norfolk for the past ten years. At the time of his death Mr. 
Halstead was pastor of three churches of the Free Will Baptist denomination in 
North Carolina, by whom he was held in high esteem. He was well known among the 
Baptists of Norfolk and has on repeated occasions occupied the pulpits of their 
churches. All who knew him respected him for his upright demeanor and probity of 
character.
He is survived by seven children, five sons and two daughters, all of whom are 
married. His funeral will be solemnized from Spurgeon Memorial Baptist Church 
Monday morning at 11 o'clock and will be conducted by the Rev. J.T. Riddick.

The funeral of Rev. Samuel J. Halstead, who died Saturday evening at 7:20 
o'clock at his home, No. 715 West Brambleton Avenue, was solemnized from 
Spurgeon Memorial Baptist Church yesterday afternoon at 1 o'clock. The services 
were conducted by the Rev. J.T. Riddick, pastor. The interment was in Elmwood 
Cemetery. The following were the pallbearers: Messrs. H.S. Jarvis, L.W. Doyle, 
R.T. Land, W.J. Fulford, L.T. Stanton and U.T. Bailey.
