Halstead died at the Protestant Hospital at 7 o'clock yesterday morning after a lingering illness. The deceased was a native of Princess Anne County, but when a child came to Norfolk and was educated at the Norfolk Academy. Later (he) held government positions in Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina, serving in the lighthouse department as bookkeeper and secretary to Admiral Jouett, Commodore T.A. Doenin and Commodore Fabin Stanley, U.S.N., afterwards admirals. He was also associated with Col. Peter C. Haines and Col. Franklin Harwood, U.S.A. He served as accountant in the custom house at Norfolk and the navy yard and was widely known as an efficient correspondent. After seven years in government work he resigned to enter mercantile pursuits in which (he) was actively engaged for ten years. Later he became interested in real estate but had been retired from business for a number of years. He purchased the Baltimore building on the Exposition grounds two years ago and was living there with his family until January 12 last, when it was destroyed by fire in which his two children were burned to death, he and his wife barely escaping with their lives. Since that time he has been ill at the home of his sister until a few weeks ago when he was removed to the Protestant hospital. Besides his widow, he is survived by a brother and two sisters, A.S. Halstead, of North Carolina; Mrs. J.J. Webb, of York, Pa. and Mrs. Samuel D. Rhodes, ,of Norfolk. ***************** HALSTEAD - At Norfolk Protestant Hospital, Saturday, September 10, 1910, at 7 a.m., HADORAM T. HALSTEAD. Funeral will take place from H.C. Smith's Funeral Apartments, MONDAY, September 12, at 3 p.m. Friends and acquaintances respectfully invited to attend. Omit flowers. ************************************************************************** The funeral of Hadoram T. Halstead was held from the apartments of Funeral Director H.C. Smith, 179 Bank Street, at 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon and was largely attended. The service was conducted by Rev. Joseph H. Amiss, of the M.E. Church, and Rev. Sparks W. Melton, D.D., of the Freemason Street Baptist Church. The interment was in Elmwood Cemetery. Following were the pallbearers: A.W. Cornick, W.W. Vicar, Curtis Old, H.G. Barbell, E.A. Goodwyn and Sandusky Dozier.
