She was surrounded by her loving family. Mrs. Halstead was born and grew up in the Lindenwood section of Norfolk. She was reared in a Christian home and was a lifelong and faithful member of Mount Olive Baptist Church, Norfolk, where she was a deaconess, member of the senior choir, Golden Age Club and Missionary Board. She attended Booker T. Washington High School and was employed in various jobs during the years including at the Portsmouth Naval Hospital and the commissary at Little Creek Naval Amphibious Base. At times, she left to be a devoted mother and homemaker. Mrs. Halstead was the widow of George W. Halstead Sr. and was also preceded in death by her parents, the Rev. William A. and Gertrude Clements; a brother, Hyram Clements; and aunts. She is survived by two daughters, Beatrice T. Woods of Virginia Beach and Margaret McIntyre of Norfolk; one son, George W. Halstead III and his wife, Debbie, of Crete, Ill.; one sister, Laura C. Davis of Norfolk; one brother, William Clements and his wife, Vivian, of Portsmouth; seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and many friends. Mrs. Halstead was a loving mother and grandmother and will truly be missed. She will be remembered for her outgoing personality, endearing her to everyone she met. A funeral will be at noon Friday at Mount Olive Baptist Church, 2401 Ludlow St., Norfolk, with the Rev. Dr. John R. Davis Sr. officiating. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery . The body will be taken to the church at 11 a.m. Visitation will be today from 2 to 8 p.m. at Riddick Funeral Service, 1225 Norview Ave., Norfolk, where family and friends will gather from 6 to 7 p.m. today.
