Halstead quietly passed away at his home, No. 127 Maltby Avenue, Brambleton, about 5 o'clock yesterday morning. The funeral will take place this afternoon at 4 o'clock from the residence. Mr. Halstead was born in Princess Anne County about forty years ago. His father, Rev. Adam Halstead, a Methodist minister, has charge in that county. The deceased is very highly spoken of by his superior officers and fellow members of the force, as well as by everyone else who knew him. He was a model officer, perfectly reliable, discreet and entirely faithful to his duty. He was the first man appointed to the force from Brambleton after it became a part of the city proper and had been on the force ever since. Before that he was a letter carrier during Mr. M. Glennan's administration of the post office and this position he also filled admirably. The station house is draped in mourning and the City Hall flag is at half mast out of respect for the dead officer. A number of officers will attend the funeral in a body. Chief Dornin, in speaking to a Virginian representative of the dead policeman said: "He was a fine officer; one of the most reliable men n the force. Tell him to do anything and you might rely on him to do it. He was always at his post and always ready for duty. "The police of Brambleton Ward have to be more independent than those of the city proper. They have no sergeants to overlook them and keep them on duty, but must be trusted to know what their duty is and attend to it without watching. Officer Halstead was an excellent man for that. He never left his beat for sickness or for any call of duty or accident that he did not telephone to headquarters informing the office of the facts. He was a good officer. He is a loss to the force." Deceased was a member of Vandalia Lodge of Odd Fellows, Brambleton Lodge of Pythians and Industry Council, Jr., O.U.A.M. Mayor Mayo wrote a communication yesterday, which was read to the police force last night, commendatory of the character of the deceased, who had, he says, been an officer for ten years and who was held in high esteem by the Board of Police Commissioners. ********************* HALSTEAD - At his residence, 179 Maltby Avenue, Wednesday morning, September 1st, at 6:40 o'clock, ETHELBERT W.
