GEO. HALSTEAD An Eminent Physician of Norfolk County Dies of Paralysis Dr. Geo. N. Halstead, a respected citizen, an eminent physician and a scholar of the county, departed this life yesterday morning at 9:15 o'clock at his home, after a two months' illness of paralysis. The deceased was 61 years of age, was born in Norfolk County in February, 1840 and was possessed of an enviable character. At the age of 21 he removed to North Carolina where he began the practice of medicine and was a surgeon in the Confederate Navy during the Civil War. He returned to his native home at the close of the war and continued the practice of his profession to his death. He was among the most scholarly men of the county and held the position of school trustee in Washington district, with the exception of a few years, since the war, and was also for a number of years road commissioner in Washington district. As well as being faithful in the various vocations of secular life, he was also faithful in the church. For thirty-one years he has been a steward in the Methodist Church, a portion of this time being a member of Liberty Street M.E. Church. He was past commander of Niemeyer-Shaw Camp, Confederate Veterans. To mourn his loss he leaves a loving wife and four daughters -- Mrs. Dr. N.G. Wilson, Mrs. C. Joseph Rountrey and Misses Georgie and Verna Halstead and Mrs. John Rodgers, all of South Norfolk. The funeral notice will appear later. NOTE: Obit appears to give name of 5 daughters. Virginian Pilot October 30, 1901 ************************************************************************** All that was mortal of Dr. George N. Halstead, who died at his home in the county Monday morning, was committed to earth in Magnolia Cemetery yesterday about noon. The solemn service was conducted by his pastor, Rev. S.S. Lambeth, D.D., of Liberty Street M.E. Church, from the family residence, at 11 o'clock and was attended by a host of friends. The many beautiful bouquets and wreaths that were brought and laid on and beside the casket bore evidence of the high esteem in which he was held by his acquaintances and friends. The death of this gentleman will be felt far beyond the family circle. As well as being a good neighbor he was a man of sterling qualities. He never faltered in what he deemed to be right. Virginian Pilot October 31, 1901 IN MEMORIAM On account of the death of Dr. GEO. N. HALSTEAD this community loses one of its most valued and highly esteemed citizens. He was a man of superior intellect, a highly educated physician, a brave soldier, a Christian gentleman, modest, unassuming, affectionate and kind; a model man. It was truly a privilege to be thrown in his company. I beg leave to mingle my tears with those of his bereaved family and feel fully assured that he is no resting in the bosom of hi Father and his God." GEO. W. WALLACE, M.D. Berkley, Va.
