Mr. Hardy, the widower of Elsie Speaks Hardy, was a native of South Carolina and the son of Carrie Martin Carlisle. He was a member of New Bethel Baptist Church. A retired merchant seaman, he worked for the National Maritime Union for 35 years. He was an Army veteran of World War II. Survivors include one daughter, Gail Hardy-Boyd of Norfolk; one son, William H. Hardy Jr. of Virginia Beach; three step-sons, Charles Brooks, George T. Granberry and Samuel Wilson, all of Norfolk; seven grandchildren, LaTasha Renee Hardy, William H. Hardy III, Michelle Hardy, Jamielle Boyd, Charles David Boyd, Carl Calhoun, and Ravonda Parker. He also is survived by his former wife and lifetime devoted friend Vernice L. Hardy. The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday in New Bethel Baptist Church, 4212 Greenwood Drive, Portsmouth, by Dr. James M. Whitaker. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery . Viewing will be Wednesday from 2 to 8 p.m. in Riddick Funeral Home. The family will be at his residence.
