Mr. Harmanson was one of the oldest members of the Norfolk bar, being seventy- two years of age. He was born in 1824, educated at William and Mary College and graduated from the University of Virginia Law school. He returned to his home in Eastville, Northampton county, and there practiced law till 1851 when he was elected Clerk of Courts and served till 1869 continuously. He was then removed by Major General Canby, and in June 1870, came to Norfolk and formed a law partnership with Major Thomas W. Pearce. In July of that year, Major Pearce was made Clerk of Courts of Norfolk, and made Mr. Harmanson his deputy, where he remained till 1872, when he resigned on account of ill health, and 1873 formed a partnership with Judge Heath, of this city, formerly a judge in Northampton county. This partnership continued till his death. He was twice married-first to Miss Heath, of Northampton county, and second to Miss Sallie Pope Taylor of this city, sister of Mr. Washington Taylor, who survives him. He leaves two daughters by his first marriage: Mrs. J.H. Dillard, whose husband is now Professor of Latin at Tulane University, New Orleans, and Mrs. John M. Robertson, of the Navy, who is now in China. Both daughters were present at the time of their father's death. The funeral will take place from St. Luke's P.E Additional Comments: Elmwood File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/va/norfolkcity/obits/h/harmanso3223gob.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/vafiles/ File size: 2.3 Kb
