The Rev. Benjamin William Harper, 66, of 930 Denhart street, died in a 
Norfolk hospital Sunday at 7 p.m. after a short illness. He was the former 
presiding elder of the Norfolk District of the Christian Methodist Episcopal 
Church, but resigned on account of failing health.

Funeral service will be held Saturday at the St. Paul Church at 11:30. The 
Rt. Rev. W. Y. Bell of South Boston, VA, senior bishop of the church, will 
have charge of the funeral. The body will lie in state at the church at 310 
E. Virginia Beach boulevard from 7 to 11:30.

Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery with Riddick Funeral Service in charge 
of funeral arrangements.

A son of Mr. and Mrs. Ryan Harper and native of Oxford, NC, he had lived 
here 58 years.

He also served as presiding elder in the Philadelphia CME District and the 
Virginia District. At the time of death he was pastor of Decatur Street CME 
Church in Richmond.

He formerly served pastorates in Lynchburg, South Boston and Broadnax.

He was a member of Five Ford Lodge No. 278, A. F. and A. M. and a member of 
the CME Conference.

Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Mary L. Harper; a son, Russell Benjamin Harper 
of Portsmouth; two daughters, Mrs. Olivia Harper Martin and Mrs. Julia 
Milburn of Norfolk; and four sisters, Mrs. Laura Haywood of Washington, DC, 
Mrs. Mary Norwood of New Rochelle, NY, Mrs. Lillian King of Brooklyn, and 
Mrs. Effie Taylor of Oxford.
