Harris, retired Norfolk teacher, was held Sunday, April 10, at 1:30 at Bank Street Baptist Church. The Rev. Dr. J. B. Henderson, pastor, conducted the service. A native of Norfolk, Miss Harris died at a Norfolk hospital at 1:05 p.m. Wednesday, April 7. She had been sick over a year, having retired from the school system last September because of failing health. She resided at 1468 Dungee street. Miss Harris was the daughter of James R. Harris Sr. and Mrs. Lila Harris. She attended the public schools in Norfolk, and was a graduate of Virginia State College. Her last teaching position was at the Laura E. Titus school where she served 15 years. Prior to that she taught at the Booker T. Washington high school and the John T. West school. She taught about 33 years. She was a member of Bank Street Baptist Church and the Phyllis Wheatley Brnach of the Daughters of Norfolk. She was for a time a member of the Mozart Singers. Miss Harris is survived by a brother, James R. Harris Jr.; a nephew, Curtis E. Harris of the U. S. Army; an uncle, Oscar James, and other relatives. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery with Hale’s Funeral Home in charge of funeral arrangements.
