He was in the 71st year of his age. The deceased was a native of North Carolina, but has spent the most of his life in Virginia. He was one of the veteran pilots of Eastern North Carolina and Virginia waters, and was one of the first pilots on the Albemarle and Chesapeake canal when that all water route was opened, connecting the Elizabeth River with North Carolina waters. He was a Confederate veteran, passed through the entire war under the command of General Mahone. While he experienced some very trying battles he escaped without a wound. The deceased was almost a lifelong Baptist and as long as able was a regular attendant at services. While his health has been declining for ten years, he was not confined to his bed until three months ago He is survived by a widow, who was a Miss Sarah Gray, of Currituck, N.C. and seven sons and daughters--- Mrs. Mary Deacon, Mrs. R.K. Abbott, Mrs. P.L. Davis, of Norfolk and Mrs. Susan Walker, of Currituck; Jackson, C.B. and Samuel A. Harris of Norfolk. The funeral will be conducted from the residence this afternoon at 3:30 o'clock. Rev. W.A Smith, pastor of the Berkley Avenue Baptist Church, will officiate and will be assisted by Rev. M.L. Bryant, pastor of Main Street Christian Church. The interment will be in Magnolia Cemetery.
