Harris, who departed this life on the morning of May 14,1917, at 10 o’clock, at his home on Bolton Street, was conducted on Wednesday, May 16, at 3 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, of which he was a dutiful member and for a long time a trustee. Had he lived, he would have been elected elder. He stood as one of Norfolk’s best contractors, highly respected by both white and colored, as one thoroughly understanding his trade. The church was thronged with friends who came to pay their last respects to their beloved friend and brother. The choir, jointly with the choir of First Baptist Church, rendered beautiful anthems. Rev. D. F. White, the pastor, officiated, and preached a deep sermon from Psalm 55:22: “Cast thy burden upon the Lord and he shall sustain thee, he shall not suffer the righteous to be moved.” The visiting ministers to pay their last respects were Rev. Green of Newport News, and Rev. Jeffries of this city, a personal friend of the deceased, who outlined the life, work and splendid character of Mr. Harris. The many and beautiful designs showed that he was loved and appreciated by many people. He leaves to mourn their loss a wife, daughters, brothers and a host of other relatives and friends.
