He was born in Dinwiddie county, Va., May 11, 1844, the son of Laban and Elizabeth Harwell. He came to Norfolk in 1866, and, from that time until his death, held the admiration and love of many friends. He was connected with the Norfolk Virginian until its consolidation with The Pilot, after which he was route agent for the Virginian-Pilot in Brambleton until about a year ago, when he was forced to retire from active life on account of ill health. He had a severe stroke of paralysis about a week ago, which resulted in his death. A man of sincere religious convictions, he was a consistent member of McKendree Methodist church and was always active in every phase of religious work. He was for 40 years a local minister in the Virginia Conference. He was educated for a physician, having graduated from the Medical College of Baltimore, but never practiced his profession. He was a member of Pickett-Buchanan Camp, Confederate Veterans. The funeral will be held from McKendree church today at 2:30 p.m., and will be conducted by Rev. George W. Jones, presiding elder of Norfolk district. The pallbearers will be L. B. Acree, J. T. Eggleston, E. O. Taylor, J. G. Parker, R. P. Howe and C. L. Hudgins. Interment will be in Elmwood cemetery. Pickett-Buchanan Camp, Confederate Veterans, will be present to pay their last tribute of respect to their dead comrade. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Rosa Virginia Harwell; four daughters, Lula B., Mattie and Grace Harwell and Mrs. F. A. Blankenship of Norfolk; four sons, A. L., L. M., and R. A. Harwell of Norfolk, and J. V. Harwell of New York; a sister, Mrs. Ida F. Jackson, and a brother, J. E. Harwell, both of Petersburg.
