                 POISON WHISKY BELIEVED CAUSE OF GROCER'S DEATH
       H. L. Harwood Found Dying In Berkley Store Early This Morning

H.L. Harwood, grocer, of 606 West Liberty Street, Berkley, was found dying 
in his store this morning about 12:30 o'clock by his wife.  Before she could 
render assistance, he died.  Police investigating the case advanced the 
theory that death resulted from poison whisky.  This surmise was supported 
by the discovery of three pint bottles of corn liquor in his pockets.  two 
of the bottles were full; the third contained a small quantity of fluid.
Detective Nowitzky, special investigator for the city coroner, took 
possession of the whisky.  He said an analysis would be made in an effort to 
trace presence of poison in it.
Mr. Harwood was about 60 years old.  He and his wife lived in the rear of 
the grocery store.  Shortly after midnight she missed him and went into the 
store to look for him.  She found him crumpled over a garbage can in the 
store, apparently suffering intense pain.  She questioned him in an effort 
to find out what ailed him.  He died within a few minutes after she found 
him.

Funeral services for Mr. Harwood, who died at his home, 606 Liberty Street, 
yesterday morning, will be conducted at the funeral apartments of J.R. 
Williams, 13 Chesapeake Avenue, South Norfolk, tomorrow afternoon at 3 
o'clock.  Burial will be in Magnolia Cemetery.
