Royster Guano Company, Southern branch of the Elizabeth River. He was tying up barges to the company's wharf when he lost his footing and fell overboard. His cries for assistance were not heard, there being no one to hear and on becoming exhausted sank to the bottom of the river. Notwithstanding, the company for which he had worked several years in the capacity as watchman and was regarded as one of their most trusted employees, has exhausted every means to recover the body, they had not met with success at a late hour last night. Mr. Haskett was 60 years old and is survived by a widow and several children, among them Mrs. Rice of Charleston, S.C. Mr. Haskett had been employed at the plant 15 years and was also one of the best known residents of South Norfolk. **************************************************************** BODY OF HASKETT COMES TO SURFACE Watchman At Royster Guano Company's Plant Drowned Dec. 24 The body of Thomas Warren Haskett, drowned December 24 in the Southern branch of the Elizabeth river near the Royster Guano Company's plant, where he had been employed nearly seventeen years as watchman, was found yesterday afternoon at 1 o'clock by the day watchman, Charles Todd. The body floated up within a few feet from where it went down when he fell from the barge which he was trying to tie to the dock during the early morning when there was considerable ice and wind on the river. As soon as the find was made known, the superintendent of the plant, J.C. Wilkerson, and his assistant went to the scene and had the body turned over to J.R. Williams, funeral director, for preparation for burial.. The river was repeatedly dredged by representatives of the Royster company, but the body could not be found. Besides his wife, who was Miss Narsis N. White of North Carolina, he is survived by five children. They are Mrs. A.E. Rice, Charleston, S.C., W.T. Haskett, Axle, Leroy and Bert Haskett. He was 55 years old. A jury sworn in by Magistrate J.L. Warden, South Norfolk, viewed the body. A verdict will be rendered today. Funeral services will take place in the parlors of J.R. Williams, undertaker, 208 Chestnut Street, this afternoon at 3:30 o'clock and will be conducted by Rev. C.E. Pleasants, pastor of the Liberty Street M.E. Church, South Norfolk Burial will be in Magnolia Cemetery. Mr. Haskett was a member of Oakdale Council, No. 70, I.O.O.F. and Thomas Jefferson Council, No. 16, Order of Fraternal Americans.
