R. Hathaway, the oldest journalist in Eastern Virginia, died at his home in this city yesterday afternoon aged 74 years. During the War Between the States Mr. Hathaway was the editor of the Norfolk Day Book, when the city was evacuated by the Confederate State troops, Gen. B.F. Butler seized his paper. Mr. Hathaway was a practical printer and for a number of years past had been employed in the Government's Printing Department in Washington. He had been confined to his bed for three months and passed away surrounded by his family. He leaves six children, all grown. The funeral will bake place from the Berkley Avenue Baptist Church this afternoon. ******************************************************************** The funeral of the late John R. Hathaway took place yesterday afternoon from the Berkley Avenue Baptist Church. Rev. H.N. Quisenberry, assisted by Rev. W.A. Seamour, conducted the services and the following gentlemen acted as pallbearers: W.F. Woodhouse, M.C. Keeling, L. Hyslop, Sr., Judge Geo. D. Parker, W.H. Lyons and D.A. Graves, Sr. The remains were laid to rest in Magnolia Cemetery.
